Highlights

Río Futaleufú
Piedra del Aguila

Futaleufú (pronounced foo-tah-lay-oo-FOO) is a small Chilean village surrounded by rugged mountains and whitewater rivers. The adventure travel and ecotourism industries are thriving here: world-class whitewater rafting, kayaking, fly-fishing, canyoning and trekking attract Chilean and international visitors from around the world.

Rapids on the Fú (as it's known locally) range from easy Class II to extremely challenging Class V-plus. Río Futaleufú is widely considered to be one of the three greatest whitewater rivers on earth. These natural wonders have not only attracted tourists, multinational corporations target the area seeking to profit by mining the mountains and damming the rivers. The official paddling season runs from December (when the river's water level is highest) to April; however, expeditions can be arranged during the offseason (usually guides require 4 paddlers commit before agreeing to an offseason expedition). During the summer, whitewater rafting expeditions run daily from Futaleufú village – wander the block immediately north of Plaza de Armas for more information.
