From Puerto Río Tranquilo, the route immediately begins climbing. As you exit town, you'll likely pass a cluster of backpackers, thumbs raised, seeking rides south. Early in the ride, blink and you'll miss the Catedral de Mármol, which from the road, looks like nothing more than a rocky piece of cliffside. Continue tracing the western shore of Lago General Carrera, until the route turns inland and takes a wide berth around the Río Leones river delta. The ride inland provides exceptional views of Monte San Valentin (4,058 m; 13,314 ft) and the surrounding mountains, comprising the northeastern portion of the Northern Patagonian Ice Field.

Camping Recommendation

Lagos General Carrera and Bertrand Bridge Camp

On the north side of the massive suspension bridge over the confluence of the two massive lakes there is a gravel driveway leading down to a small parking area where there is plenty of space for tent-camping and a few spaces for vehicles.  Continuing beyond the parking area, a path leads to another camping area directly under the bridge. From these sites, enjoy spectacular views of Lago General Carrera to the east and Lago Bertrand, glaciers and snowy mountains to the west.  Say hello the the resident cat, Michael Jackson, for us.  Caution: pumas have been spotted at this site.
