From the tiny fishing village of Puyuhuapi, the route follows the Carretera Austral along the eastern shore of the Puyuhuapi fjord (this is also the western frontier of Parque Nacional Queulat). After passing the thermal pools of Termas Del Ventisquero, the route turns inland toward Ventisquero Colgante (aka the hanging glacier).

Road Closures & Detours

There is a lot of construction happening south of Puyuhuapi. Most traffic-control stops are one-lane closures that result in ~20-30 minutes of waiting; however, there are two longer waits:

  1. Road repairs (~15 km south of Puyuhuapi). A bridge is undergoing extensive repairs (due to an accident) and vehicles traffic must take a ferry around the site. Ferries run between 8am and 7pm.
  2. Queulat Pass (~30 km south of Puyuhuapi) is completely closed to traffic of any kind from 1pm to 5pm daily.

Camping Recommendation

Arroyo El Finado

Flat grassy area for tent-camping, next to a bridge on the east bank of Arroyo El Finado (~1 kilometer northeast of Piedra Del Gato). The spot is partially hidden from the road and the bridge can provide shelter from the rain.  The arroyo is easy-to-access and fast flowing (use caution when gathering water). It joins with the powerful Río Cisnes just south of the camping spot.
